Winston-Salem State prevails 64-47 over Virginia Union University at 2024 NBA HBCU Classic

During 2024 NBA All Star Weekend, the Winston-Salem State University men’s basketball team defeated Virginia Union University 64-47 in the 2024 NBA HBCU Classic on Saturday, February 17, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

The game took place in Indianapolis, Indiana as Winston-Salem State would play in their third edition of the HBCU Classic. 

According to WSSU, the school is the first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) to win the Classic.

The Rams were led by Ketron “KC” Shaw, who scored a game high 15 points. In addition to Shaw, Jaylen Alston added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

With the victory, WSSU improved to 17-8 overall and 10-5 in CIAA Conference play. According to WISH-TV, there were several activities that took place for attendees, including the AT&T HBCU Career Development Session, NBA HBCU Classic Pep Rally at Google Pixel Combine, NBA HBCU Classic Pre-Game Celebration, NBA All-Star x HBCU Student Art Design Showcase and the All-Star HBCU Event Intern Program. ESPN hosts and HBCU alumni Stephen A. Smith (WSSU)also made an appearance to discuss HBCU experiences.

The 2024 NBA HBCU Classic broadcast aired on TNT, NBA TV, and ESPN2.
