Chicago State University men’s basketball team falls to 0-2

The Chicago State Cougars fell to 0-2 in conference play this weekend, after suffering a 86-54 loss to Seattle University on Saturday, January 4, at the Emil and Patricia A. Jones Convocation Center.

Thanks to a strong scoring contribution by the Cougars, the team jumped out to a 12-1 lead early in the first half.

Although the Cougars offense would build an 11-point lead early on, the Redhawks offense countered with a 25-2 run of their own.

The run was started on a three-ball by SU’s Delante Jones, giving his team a 12-point lead at 26-14.

Turnovers continue to plague the Cougars throughout the game, as the Redhawks accumulated a 41-26 lead at halftime.

Throughout the second half, the Redhawks would dominate the game on both ends of the floor. The team built a 33-point lead while outscoring the Coug- ars 45-28 to close out the game.

In spite of being hindered by early foul trouble, junior guard Xavier Johnson (Dallas, Texas/-Hopkins H.S.) led the Cougars in scoring with 18 points, two steals and four rebounds in 23 minutes of play.

Johnson received a little scoring help and strong rebounding contribution from freshmen guard Rajier Jones. Jones finished with seven points and six rebounds for the Cougars. In addition to Jones’ rebound contributions, junior center Solomon Hunt led the Cougars with seven rebounds in the contest.

Following Saturday’s loss against the Seattle University Redhawks, the Cougars will hit the road and play conference foes New Mexico State University on Thursday, January 9, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Game time 8:00 p.m.
