Chicago Cubs Kris Bryant named National League Player of The Week

After batting .500 with five homers and 13 RBIs last weekend, Major League Baseball named Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant their National League Player of The Week on Monday afternoon, September 16.

The announcement came shortly after Bryant and the Cubs displayed an offensive explosion against their National League Central Division rivals Pittsburgh Pirates over the weekend. The offense smashed 14 home runs on 47 runs during the team’s four game win streak.

Today marks the first time Bryant has won the NL Player of The Week Award, as his club added a 2 game lead over NL Central rivals Milwaukee Brewers for second place of the NL Wildcard race.

The 6’5″ slugger out of the University of San Diego have acquired a few accolades during his playing career, including the NL Rookie of the Year Award in 2015 followed by the NL MVP Award during the Cubs 2016 World Series run.

According to MLB.com,  Bryant posted an OPS of 1.720 in six games last week, including a pair of multihomer games (two homers coming on  Sunday against the Pirates). And with his two homerun blast on Sunday against the Pirates, Bryant reached the 30 homerun mark for the first time since 2016.

In addition to his awards, Bryant is the first Cub to earn NL Player of the Week honors since Anthony Rizzo last August.
