With an injury to Lonzo Ball for a second straight season, the Chicago Bulls signed three-time All-NBA Defensive Selection and Chicago native Patrick Beverley on Tuesday, February 21, following his release.
According to the Chicago Bulls, the terms of the contract have not been disclosed. In a related move, center Tony Bradley and guard/forward Malcolm Hill were waived.
Beverley, a 10-year veteran, appeared in 45 games (all starts) and averaged 6.5 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 26.9 minutes with the Los Angeles Lakers before being traded to Orlando on February 9 – part of a four-team trade. Beverley never suited up with the Magic and was waived by Orlando on February 12.
He has played for four NBA franchises (Houston Rockets, L.A. Clippers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and the L.A. Lakers) across his decade tenure in the league, logging career averages of 8.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 27.4 minutes across 571 NBA games (483 starts). Beverley has also been named to three All-NBA Defensive Teams, including first team honors in 2016-17. That same season, he also became the first player in NBA history to win the NBA Hustle Award.
Beverley was drafted 42nd overall by the Lakers in the 2009 NBA Draft before he was traded to the Miami Heat on draft night. However, Beverley didn’t make his NBA debut until the 2012-13 season after signing with the Houston Rockets.
Prior to joining the Rockets, Beverley played for Olympiacos in Greece (2009-10) and Spartak Saint Petersburg in Russia (2011-13) after spending two seasons at the University of Arkansas (2006-08), where he held career averages of 13.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.5 steals in 70 games (67 starts). Beverley’s collegiate output garnered him 2006-07 SEC Rookie of the Year honors and a 2006-07 SEC All-Freshman selection.
Beverley was born and raised in Chicago and attended John Marshall Metropolitan High School where he led the state in scoring (37.3 points) as a senior.
Beverley will wear No. 21.
