YWCA Domestic Violence Awareness Candlelight Vigil

The YWCA of Northwest Indiana and the City of Gary will host a Candlelight Vigil on Thursday, October 19, 2017 at 6:00pm at the YWCA of Northwest Indiana (150 W. 15th Avenue, Gary, IN.) in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

This public event is designed to speak out against violence by participating, educating and raising community awareness. Violence against women and girls, in its many forms, has no demographic boundaries. It can take place in overt forms, such as domestic violence, sexual assault, and human and sexual trafficking; or can be subtle, for example, in the use and normalization of violent language, or the sexualization and objectification of women and girls through media and film. Violence impacts women and girls from all age groups, races, religions and socioeconomic backgrounds.

This year’s keynote speaker, Jennifer Hudson of Gary, will provide a compelling survivor’s story of sexual assaults and violence from childhood to her support system as a motivational speaker today.

This event is free and open to the public – we welcome everyone!

Week without Violence

YWCA of Northwest Indiana will join hundreds of its colleagues nationwide in observing YWCA Week without Violence, October 16-20. As a community, we have an opportunity to speak out against violence by participating in this signature initiative created by the YWCA nearly 24 years ago, to mobilize people in communities across the United States to take action against all forms of violence, wherever it occurs.

YWCA of Northwest Indiana is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, stand up for social justice, help families and strengthen our community. YWCA of Northwest Indiana is part of an international movement serving over 2 million in the United States and 25 million worldwide.
