‘Walk Where You Live’ 5K Walk/Run Saturday, Aug. 20

The Barbara Bates Foundation will host its 3rd Annual “Walk Where You Live” 5K Walk/Run, to benefit the Barbara Bates Foundation Breast Wellness Center at Sinai Health System this Saturday, August 20. The Barbara Bates Foundation Breast Wellness Center provides breast cancer awareness programs to women of color who otherwise would not have access to such services. In 2015, the event, held at Douglas Park, drew nearly 500 runners and walkers to the historic park in support of breast cancer education.

Since 2012, the Barbara Bates Foundation has contributed over a half million dollars to fund an institutional grant on ‘Disparity and Education of Breast Cancer’ in partnership with Sinai Health System. The grant serves to address and educate individuals about the disparities in access to breast cancer care faced by women in the African American and Latino communities. The Wellness Center, currently being designed, will provide a warm, welcoming and beautiful space to receive information and mammograms.

The funds were raised through the Foundation’s efforts, most notably through “Knocking Out Breast Cancer,” a fashion show featuring a special collection of clothing created by fashion designer Barbara Bates and modeled by breast cancer survivors. This year’s “Knocking Out Breast Cancer” will be held Sunday, October 16, 2014 at the Bridgeport Art Center at 1200 W. 35th Street. In 2014 the Foundation expanded its fundraising efforts by initiating the “Walk Where You Live” 5K to further engage supporters,

“Our goal remains to engage more community members in these efforts, and call attention to the great work Sinai is doing outreaching to women of color in the community it serves,” said Barbara Bates, president of the Barbara Bates Foundation.

Leaders from Sinai Hospital including Karen Teitelbaum, Sinai Health System president and CEO, Richard Kim, MD, chairman of the Mount Sinai Hospital Department of Radiology, and Debra Wesley, executive vice president for community outreach at Sinai will be taking part in Walk Where You Live.

To register for the event on-line visit http://bit.ly/2bateswlk8. The registration fee is $50 per walker and team registrations are welcome. You may also contact Barbara Bates Designs with questions at 312.808.8091 or email [email protected].
