U Chicago earns four athletes of the week

The University Athletic Association (UAA) and Midwest Conference (MWC) combined to select four University of Chicago student-athletes as Athletes of the Week last Monday.

The conference named football player Marco Cobian the UAA and MWC Offensive Athlete of the Week after his career-best performance against Beloit College. The senior quarterback led the Maroons to a 48-0 victory on the road. And completed 17 of 19 passes (89.5 percent) for 321 yards and three touchdowns. Through four games, Cobian is completing 76.6 percent of his passes for 533 yards, six touchdowns and one interception.

Following Cobian’s announcement, junior running back Mike Martinson garnered UAA Football Special Teams Athlete of the Week. As the team’s punt returner, Martinson fielded four punts and traversed 79 yards for 19.8 yards per return at Beloit. His long return went 37 yards. Offensively, he also scored two touchdowns on the ground. For the season, Martinson is averaging 16.9 yards per punt return.

Maroons Volleyball’s  Katherine Wilson was named UAA Defensive Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career. The junior libero paced the defensive effort in No. 3-ranked UChicago’s wins over Brandeis University and No. 14-ranked Carnegie Mellon University. She averaged 6.14 digs per set in the matches for a defense that limited Brandeis to a .059 hitting percentage and CMU to a .045 hitting percentage. Wilson leads the squad with 274 digs (4.89 per set) while serving up 26 aces from the service line on the year.

Miranda Malone also picked up her second-straight UAA Defensive Athlete of the Week in women’s soccer. In the UAA league opener against Emory University, the junior goalkeeper collected a career-high 10 saves in the 2-1 victory. She made five saves in each half. Malone currently owns a 0.78 goals against average with an .806 save percentage through nine games.
