The New 411

By Raymond Ward, Chicago Crusader

SOUTHSIDE!!!!! To mimic the voice of one of those robotic television announcers…you’ve seen him on “Blackish,” and you’ve seen him in “Barbershop 2”…and beginning April 10th you’ll be able to see him on the TBS series “Angie Tribeca”…but now you can see him in person. Yes, Deon Cole is coming back home to Chicago’s The Improv, April 7th through April 9th.

That’s right, The Improv welcomes one of the stars of ABC-TV’s Blackish and the hit film Barbershop 2 to Chicago this weekend. Originally, from the south side of Chicago, Deon Cole has a charismatic personality and original style that makes him one of the most popular performers on the comedy scene today. As a standup comedian, he has been featured on “Shaq’s All Star Comedy Jam,” “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien,” “John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show,” “Laffapalooza” and “Mash Ups,” along with his own “Comedy Central Presents: Deon Cole.”

After a standup appearance on “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien” in 2009, Deon was offered a job as a staff writer for the show and quickly became known for his hilarious appearances as a commentator on the show. In 2010, he was nominated for his first Emmy Award and Writers Guild Award along with the other writers of “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien” and he was named one of the “Top 10 Comedians to Watch” by Variety Magazine. In 2011, Deon received his second Emmy nomination for his work with the writers of “Conan” and in 2013 he went on to star in his own show for TBS called, “Deon Cole’s Black Box.”

Show times for Deon Cole are Friday, April 7th at 8:00 p.m. and 10:15 p.m.; Saturday, April 8th at 7:00 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. and Sunday, April 9th at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $28, for more information and /or tickets call 847-240-2001. The Improv is located at 5 Woodfield Road (inside the Woodfield Mall) in Schaumburg, Illinois. There is a two item minimum in the showroom and you must be 18 years of age or older.
