VOLUNTEERS PREPARE TO serve dinner to hundreds of guests attending the 35th Annual Spirit of Christmas Dinner at the Gary Career Center.
On Sunday, Dec. 24, State Rep. Vernon G. Smith (D-Gary) hosted the 35th annual Spirit of Christmas Dinner and Gift Giveaway on Christmas Eve. The free event took place from 1-4 p.m. at the Gary Career Center, located at 35th & King Drive. Although the annual dinner occurred in Smith’s district, House District 14, it welcomed attendees from all Districts and walks of life. Co-hosted by Dwight Williams and Robin Bernal Ealy, this Christmas Eve tradition paid tribute to Rev. Julia E. Smith, the former pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, and Patricia Tillotson, a retired educator from the Gary School Corporation.
“I initiated this tradition 35 years ago to honor my mother, Rev. Julia E. Smith, and Patricia Tillotson, an educator whom I greatly admired, by perpetuating one of their greatest passions—giving back to the community,” Smith reflected. “These two women dedicated much of their time and energy here on Earth to helping those in need. There is no better time to carry on their legacy of goodwill than the holiday season, which is precisely why I created this Spirit of Christmas event.
“The doors were open to everyone, but I personally extended a hand to those in need of food, company, gifts for their children, or Christmas spirit this Christmas Eve.”
During the event, there was no shortage of volunteers or food. The volunteers, including local civic, church, and legislative leaders, joined forces to ensure the success of the annual dinner. Smith expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community.
