It was an afternoon of the spoken word. On Thursday, July 27, dozens of students celebrated the life and legacy of Gwendolyn Brooks at Arturo Velesques Institute on the South Side. Brook’ daughter, Nora Brooks Blakely read one of her mother’s poems after a handful of students performed a musical tribute and recited some of the Puiltizer Prize winning poet’s works.
