POP: Summer Health Professions Enrichment Program (HPEP)

The mission of the POP Health Professions Enrichment Program is to recruit, retain, and graduate underserved racial/ethnic minority students, specifically African Americans and Latinos in Northwest Indiana in the health professions, as well as to expand educational opportunities for these populations at the pre-college level (11-12) in preparation for undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional education.

ACADEMIC HEALTH PROFESSION ENRICHMENT PROGRAM (HPEP) is for underserved minority high school students in grades 11^th and 12^th. The program engages serious minded students interested in Health Professions which include: Physicians, Dentistry, Advance Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants.  This is a multi-partnership program utilizing surrounding academic and community settings such as The Methodist Hospitals, Indiana University Northwest, Purdue University Calumet, Community Health Net Federally Qualified Health Clinic, as well as, various physician and dentist’s offices

This 4-day program will have a maximum of 40 students.  We have reserved spots for 30 students interested in medicine and dentistry.  The remaining spots will be reserved for 20 students interested in advanced nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

Preparatory College Skills are taught.  Three-hour CPR and Basic Life Saving Skills taught.  Students will receive Heart Saver Certifications sponsored by the POP Foundation.  Tutoring services may be offered for students having difficulties with certain classes.

HPEP Mentoring/Shadowing Program: Students in the HPEP program are partnered with Health Professionals in their area of interest.  Students may utilize the mentors as a resource for information about their career choice or shadowing to learn more about their career.

Objectives for Summer Health Professionals Enrichment Program

Rationale:

According to the Journal of Higher Education 2015, Affirmative Action bans in six states has caused a decrease in the number of underrepresented minority students matriculating into medical schools. Particularly these bans have resulted in a 17% decline. This is particularly worrisome since the number of minorities throughout the country is expected to increase exponentially by 2020. As a result, there is demand for more programs geared towards introducing gifted minority students into the medical field at an early age. Students must be more prepared and knowledgeable so that they can matriculate into medical school on their own merits. HPEP was designed to increase racial diversity for underserved minority medical students in the medical profession.

Objectives:

1. To introduce gifted serious minded underserved minority high school students into health careers in medicine, dentistry, advance nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.
2. Provide seminars and lectures consisting of speakers in the medical field discussing strategies and goals to have a successful career in medicine.
3. Expose high students to various health professional settings at Indiana University NW School of Medicine, Purdue University Calumet Advance Practice Nursing Program, Methodist Hospitals, and Gary Community Health Net Federally Qualified Health Clinic.
4. To demonstrate “Best Practices” for Excelling in College and Higher Education.
5. To demonstrate “Best Practices” for Excelling on Standardized Exams
6. To teach students have to write motivating personal statements for careers in medicine.
7. To teach students Basic Lifesaving Skills and CPR.
8. To provide tutoring services for students who need help in challenging classes
9. To create a shadowing and mentoring program with other minority Healthcare Professions to further encourage students to pursue careers in the health care fields
