Mayor Melton appoints Dr. Janet Seabrook as Health Commissioner

In a groundbreaking move, Mayor Eddie Melton has announced the appointment of Dr. Janet Seabrook as the City of Gary’s new Health Commissioner, making her the first female to hold this position in the city’s history. 

Dr. Seabrook brings over 20 years of experience in public health and has dedicated her career to bringing high-quality, affordable healthcare to families of all income levels. She has served as Founder and CEO of Community HealthNet since 1996, where she oversees 8 locations.

“Dr. Seabrook is an exceptional leader who brings an extensive wealth of knowledge to this role,” said Mayor Melton. “Her experience as one of Northwest Indiana’s most respected physicians will be invaluable to our community. We look forward to working with her to improve the quality of life for our citizens.” 

As the City of Gary’s Health Commissioner, Dr. Seabrook will be responsible for overseeing the city’s public health initiatives. Her duties will include addressing the infant and maternal mortality rates in Gary, establishing a mobile mental health crisis response initiative, and overseeing the AARP Age-Friendly Advisory Council to address the needs of Gary’s senior citizen population. 

“I am honored to be appointed as Health Commissioner for the City of Gary,” said Dr. Seabrook. “I look forward to collaborating with community organizations, healthcare providers, and city officials to improve the health and well-being of our community.”  

Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Janet Seabrook moved with her family to Gary, Indiana at an early age. She ascended from humble beginnings to become one of America’s most esteemed physicians. Throughout her career she has shown an unwavering focus on delivering exceptional healthcare to all individuals, irrespective of their financial means or background. Dr. Seabrook is also an accomplished public speaker and influencer, recognized for her ability to educate and inform the public on healthy lifestyles and practices. 

Dr. Seabrook holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Tuskegee University and a degree in Medicine from Meharry Medical College. She received an MBA from Purdue University Calumet in 2005.
