Local ministry celebrates 20 years of service to the community

Sojourner Truth House (STH), a day center for homeless and at-risk women and children, is celebrating its 20th Anniversary by hosting a Day of Celebrations on Saturday, September 16, 2017.

The 20th Anniversary Celebration will begin with an Open House from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at Sojourner Truth House, 410 W. 13th Avenue. Following the Open House, there will be a Celebration Mass with Bishop Donald J. Hying at the Cathedral of the Holy Angels, 640 Tyler Street. The day of celebration will culminate with the 20th Anniversary Dinner from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the Avalon Manor, 3550 US 30 in Merrillville.

Sojourner Truth House was founded in 1997 and is sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. The day center served 800 clients in its first year, and today serves an average of 2,092 clients per month, with nearly half of them children. STH serves homeless women and their children, providing individualized case management, professional and life skills training that equips them with the tools needed to become self-sufficient. SIB also operates one of the largest community food pantries in the area for Gary residents, a clothes closet and is one of two few that provide toiletries and personal items.

The Open House and Celebration Mass are free and open to the public. Tickets for the Celebration Dinner are $75.00 per person and must be purchased in advance. For more information and tickets, contact Terry Sanders at (219) 947-8565 or [email protected].
