Join Purdue Northwest for a week-long celebration of Veterans Day

Purdue University Northwest recognizes Veterans Day with a week full of activities on both the Hammond and Westville Campuses from November 6 to November 10. All events are open to PNW students, faculty, staff and the community.

The week began with a flag-raising ceremony on the west lawn of Lawshe Hall at the Hammond Campus. PNW Professor of Finance and Economic Development Tony Sindone delivered remarks. Sindone retired from the United States Air Force where he served on active duty from 1973 to 1979, and in the Reserves until 1985.

Past military uniforms will be displayed in the Library Student Faculty Building on the Westville Campus throughout the week. Graduate student and PNW Archives staff member Cara Vukusich will lead this initiative.

The week will conclude on the Westville campus with a flag raising ceremony at 7:30 a.m., Friday, Nov. 10 in front of the Schwarz Building, 1401 S. US 421. The flag-raising ceremony will be led by the Michigan City High School Junior ROTC program and guided by Senior Marine Instructor, Major Tom McGrath. The National Anthem will be performed by former PNW student Nanda Danitschek.

PNW will also celebrate the 242nd birthday of the U.S. Marines by serving cake at 11 a.m., Fri., Nov. 10 in the first floor concourse of the Student Union & Library at the Hammond Campus.

Veteran scholarship winners will read excerpts from their essays, “What Veterans Day Means to Me,” followed by remarks from Col. Richard Ligon, who retired from the United States Army after 36 years of decorated service. Refreshments and a continental breakfast will follow in the Library Student Faculty Building, Room 144.

Further information about the events, including persons requiring accommodations, may be obtained by contacting Linda Neulieb on the Westville Campus at 219-785-5230 or Akili Shakur on the Hammond Campus at 219-989-2727.
