Gary Public Works mobilizes 10 contractors to help with clean up

City’s Grass Cutting Initiative In Effect

Gary residents should see a significant difference in the appearance of a number of areas in the city since the City of Gary’s Public Works Department mobilized a group of contractors to help clean up vacant lots in the city.

The city’s City-wide Grass Cutting initiative kicked off last week with 10 contractors cutting and cleaning up on main thoroughfares and addressing 311 concerns throughout the city. Contractors have been assigned in 10 different areas in the city cutting grass around schools and/or in areas where children wait for buses or walk to school.

Contractors will work according to a route map provided by Public Works and according to 311 calls for their route and district. Contractors had an opportunity to assess work areas prior to contracting with the city. Each contractor is required to take photos before work begins and after completion.

Additionally, each contractor is assigned to a Public Works staff member who evaluates routes before and after for completion.

The city of Gary continues its 5x5x5 Cleanups in each city district and Blight Buster Days. The next 5x5x5 is Thursday, September 12 in the 2nd District.
