Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson’s Annual UNCF Mayor’s Breakfast Features Reverend Dr. Ozzie E. Smith Jr.

Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson and the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Northwest Indiana Leadership Council will host the annual Mayor’s Breakfast benefiting the UNCF on Wednesday, February 6, 2019; 8:30 a.m. at the Genesis Convention Center.

The Mayor’s Breakfast where more than 300 businesses, civic, education and community leaders gather, supports Gary and Northwest Indiana students in their pursuit of higher education.  

This year’s breakfast will feature special guest and keynote speaker Reverend Dr. Ozzie E. Smith Jr., Senior Pastor of Covenant United Church of Christ in South Holland, Illinois. Dr. Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Langston University; a historically Black college and a Master of Education in Music degree from the University of Memphis.

UNCF is known as the nation’s largest minority organization supporting higher education, student development and other programs for students attending historically black colleges and universities. The UNCF Northwest Indiana Leadership Council established in 2007 has raised more than $400,000 and has awarded more than 60 Scholarships to students in Northwest Indiana. Proceeds from the mayor’s breakfast will assist to provide scholarships for Northwest Indiana students.
