Gary Alumni Pathway to Students (GAPS) with the will host the Man-Boy Breakfast at Bailly STEM Academy on Saturday, December 7, 2019. The Man-Boy Breakfast (MBB) is the award-winning signature program on the Concerned Christian Men (CCM), a 21-year old organization dedicating to empowering young African American males to become responsible and contributing members of their communities. The MBB has served of 40,000 South and West Side Chicago elementary school boys since 1996.
The breakfast will target 4th-8th grade boys and men to serve as chaperones/mentors. Registration starts at 8:30 am, the Breakfast at 9 am sharp and we will conclude at 1:15 pm. The MBB will feature an opening program elevating the theme of the breakfast – “I Am Teachable” and a hearty breakfast served the West Side Boys Basketball team
The guest speaker will be Carlton Guthrie, 1970 alumnus of West Side and Founder and Board Chair of the GAPS organization. Guthrie is also the Co-Chairman of Detroit Chassis, one of the nation’s largest and most successful Black-owned-owned businesses. Detroit Chassis has received several national awards, including the 2018 “Black Business of the Year” by the National Business League.
After the speaker, we conduct three breakout sessions:
- The Creative Media Zone. Hosted by YEP Nation, The CMZ provides youth with the digital media creation skills to create media ranging from music and mini movies to augmented and virtual reality programs.
- 4G Foundation for Success Workshop. The 4G’s – God, Goals, Guidance and Guts – underpin all of CCM’s programs and provide an easy-to-understand framework to guide young boy’s conduct and decision making.
- BBall Boot Camp, hosted by Swish Dreams, assisted by the WS Boys Basketball team.

GAPS will also host a Holiday Symposium with the Jobs for the Future (JFF) group to discuss its findings from a Gary / northwest Indiana asset mapping project earlier this year. JFF, the nation’s foremost organization devoted to driving change in the American workforce and educational systems, conducted interviews with 40+ representatives from 25 organizations, including the Gary School District, Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson and her team, and several key community stakeholders to better understand the assets, opportunities, partnerships, activities/programs, and initiatives in Gary that can be leveraged to support our students’ entry into and success in postsecondary education and high-demand careers.
The Symposium will be followed by the GAPS Annual Holiday Reception, from 5:30 to 7 pm also at the Art House. All GAPS members, volunteers and community partners are welcome to partake in networking and hors d’oeuvres provided by Chef Tasha Tanae, with musical entertainment provided West Side students.
