Board of Review opens assessment appeals for South/Southwest residents; filing deadline: Feb 6th

The Board of Review has set a deadline of February 6th for tax appeals for Lake Township –which covers the South and Southwest Sides of Chicago. Taxpayers may appeal their assessment for free with the BOR every year. Taxpayers may file an appeal at one of Commissioner George Cardenas’ Appeal Events (details below) and may also appeal online at https://www.cookcountyboardofreview.com/. The BOR independently hears assessment appeals and has the authority to change assessments as a check and balance to the Cook County Assessor’s Office.

For tax year 2021, 537,000 of Cook County’s 1.8 million Property Index Numbers (PINs) were appealed and 51 percent of individual residential filers saw reductions in their assessments. The only requirement for a taxpayer to appeal a property assessment is a completed complaint form filed before the township appeal period closes.   Taxpayers will have the option of filing a complaint online at www.CookCountyBoardofReview.com.

After an extensive outreach program run by Commissioner George Cardenas and community groups, last year saw thousands of extra appeals filed by homeowners in neighborhoods across Chicago with traditionally low appeal rates. Individual filers won their appeals 64 percent of the time and residential assessments in those areas were reduced an average of 10.7 percent.

“The Appeals Workshops bring the services of my office directly to residents, providing more transparency and fairness in the property assessment appeal process,” Commissioner Cardenas said.  “Our workshops educate the public about the appeals process and offer property owners the opportunity to appeal their assessments, provide evidence, and talk with analysts in their preferred language without taking time off of work and coming downtown,” added Commissioner Cardenas.  “We want the property tax appeals process to be fair, open, and convenient to all Cook County residents.”
