In spite of 13 strikeouts and one walk by pitcher Yu Darvish, the Chicago Cubs fell to the Cincinnati Reds 4-2 at Wrigley Field on Tuesday night.
In addition to the 13 strikeouts by Darvish, the Cubs pitcher would also make history, striking out a team record eight consecutive batters in a single game. Placing him first in the Cubs record books.
Darvish’s eight consecutive strikeouts were nearly recorded in chronological order, as pitcher Sonny Gray (who batted 9th ) struck out first, Josh VanMeter (who batted first) struck out second, Joey Votto (who batted second) struck out third , Eugenio Suárez (who batted third) struck out fourth, Aristides Aquino (who batted fourth) struck out fifth, Tucker Barnhart (who batted fifth) struck out sixth, Phillip Ervin (who batted sixth) struck out seventh, and Brian O’Gray (who batted 7th) struck out as the eighth consecutive batter of the night.
Darvish’s streak ended when José Peraza lined out to third base to kick off the fifth inning.
Darvish night ended pitching 7 innings, 13 strikeouts while surrendering 4 earned runs.
Reds pitcher Sonny Gray would outduel Darvish in Tuesday night’s match up, going 6 and 2/3 innings on 3 walks, 9 strikeouts, and 2 earned runs.

After watching their five game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday night at Wrigley, the Cubs are now tied with the Milwaukee Brewers for the final spot in the NL Wildcard race. Both teams have identical records of 82-69.
