Mayoral candidate Bill Daley discusses veterans issues

Mayoral candidate William “Bill” Daley recently joined Vietnam Veteran Host Cliff Kelley on the America’s Heroes Group broadcast to discuss current issues with veterans and an upcoming event his campaign is sponsoring. Daley is an attorney and the former White House Chief of Staff for President Barack Obama.

In his capacity as Chief of Staff, he visited the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland with his wife. The president’s chief of staff has medals that he can award veterans very similar to what the president does except from the Chief of Staff’s office. Daley described his experience as one of the most “moving and meaningful afternoons he had spent in his life.” It was there dedication to the country and positive attitude about dealing with their own situations that inspired him and his wife. The soldiers had a steadfast optimism for what they were doing and what they wanted to continue doing for their county.

“They cannot be forgotten heroes. They have to be the people that we continue to deal with or else we are less people,” said Daley referring to the professional men and women who are America’s veterans,

Daley for Mayor is sponsoring a free all you can eat buffet for America’s Heroes Group in partnership with the National Women Veterans United. The event—“We Care” is for “Silent Heroes with Invisible Wounds.” It is for Military Women Veterans and their children only on Saturday, December 1 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Pearl’s Place, 3901 S. Michigan Avenue in Chicago. To attend the organizers, ask that you RSVP by calling 872-731-2150 or by emailing [email protected].

It recognizes the “silent heroes,” military women veterans who have served honorably on land, in the air, and at sea, in every capacity, both in leadership and as enlisted personnel.

Not as well-known as some of the above-mentioned programs is the “Silent Heroes with Invisible Wounds” initiative.

Often when women veterans return home they face challenges for which they are not prepared, such as delays in receiving benefits, homelessness, PTSD, and undiagnosed Military Sexual Trauma triggers. Many are at risk of losing their independence due to extended delays in accessing services and processing benefits.

The National Women Veterans United, an organization founded by Rochelle Crump, assists military women who have served in all branches of the Armed Forces, during peace time and during times of war. The organization, in partnership with WVON1690 AM America’s Heroes Group host Cliff Kelley, addresses all veterans concerns as well as specific women veterans’ issues during broadcasts on Saturdays from 4 to 5p.m CST.
