‘Turn Up: Millennial Praise & Worship Music Workshop’

Trinity United Church of Christ, Gary, located at 1276 W. 20th Ave., will host Chicago-based artist, activist, and pastor J.Kwest on Saturday, July 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for  “Turn Up,” a musical experience. The soulful workshop is designed to celebrate and explore millennial rap, hip-hop, and spoken word in a faith-based environment. Julian “J.Kwest” DeShazier is senior pastor of University Church in Hyde Park, Chicago, Illinois, and widely recognized for his ability to make church relevant and impactful for today’s generation, with music.

“We’re about embracing new ways and partnerships to ensure local youth can explore a moral and spiritual lifestyle in a real, relevant, and safe way through the medium of Hip Hop,” said Rev. Dr. John E.  Jackson, Sr., senior pastor of Trinity. “It’s no secret the world is fast-changing. When it comes to youth – from our one-time programs to ongoing mentoring and ministry efforts – we’re open to the right collaboration to make a difference.”

Youth programs like Turn U are supported by a grant Trinity received from the Forum for Theological Exploration, based in Atlanta, GA. Jackson said Trinity wanted to ramp up efforts in introducing youth to faith. “The Pew Research Group on Religion & Public Life reported in recent years a steady decline in Millennials who belong to or believe in organized religion,” said Jackson. “J.Kwest is the sort of passionate and educated minister who inspires all ages to believe. We’re excited to host him!”

Turn Up is an ideal activity for any young person or youth leader interested in music or ministry. This interactive session is geared toward youth 12 and older, but all ages are welcome. Adult supervision required for minors. The event is free and light refreshments will be served. Registration is required via EventBrite, Search – Turn Up.
