The Ebony Chapter of the Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. (TLOD), a national non-profit, humanitarian service organization, honored Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago Vice President Barbara McGowan during the Sparkling Jewels Award Ceremony held at the Elmcrest Banquet Hall in Elmwood Park on April 28.
Vice President McGowan, Congressman Danny Davis and Cook County Commissioner Larry R. Rogers, Jr. received awards for their humanitarian, political and community service and as trailblazers in helping to alleviate the myriad of problems confronting youth in Cook County. TLOD was established in 1964 with a purpose of marshaling the talents and energies of local leaders to alleviate moral and social problems confronting our youth. Since its inception, the organization has expanded its objectives to improve the status of women, provide service to senior citizens, beautify communities and engage in partnerships.
There are numerous chapters nationwide which support the National Council of Negro Women, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the United Negro College Fund. Membership in TLOD has grown over the past 54 years to include thousands of dedicated, hardworking and powerful women.
“It is a tremendous honor to be recognized for something I am passionate about,” said Vice President McGowan. “I believe children are our future, and the adults in their lives are important role models.”
