YWCA of Northwest Indiana hosts “Books with Buddy”

Last week, actor, comedian and Gary native Buddy Lewis decided to spend time in his hometown reading to area youth. The event, titled  “Books with Buddy,” was held at the YWCA of NWI in Gary. The Gary Literacy Coalition provided free books to the children, and the Gary Public Library brought the Tech Mobile onsite for youth to explore the computers and other digital features aboard the community vehicle.

“We wanted to do something fun and engaging for our students while highlighting famous Gary natives who come back to give back,” said YWCA of NWI Executive Director Caren Jones.

The community brought out their elementary school-aged children to “Books with Buddy,” and their smiling faces and laughter were proof of their enjoyment. Buddy read from the book “Good Character Matters” written by local author Ollette Washington.

The children were able to interact with Lewis and pose for a few pictures. Former State Senator and YWCA of NWI board member Earline Rogers was on hand to greet Lewis.

“This is such a wonderful treat for the children,” said Rogers. “I was wondering if Buddy would remember me, and he did.”

The YWCA of NWI is currently providing summer day camp for youth ages 6-13. For more information, call 219-881-9922 or visit www.ywcanwi.org.
