Xavier University of Louisiana officially launched its year-long centennial celebration on Friday, January 17, with a celebratory morning mass that brought together students, alumni, faculty, staff, elected officials, and community leaders to honor 100 years of academic excellence, faith, service, and leadership.
The centennial celebration, held on Xavier’s historic campus, marked the beginning of a series of year-long celebrations commemorating the university’s founding in 1925 by Saint Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament.
After mass, the centennial celebration moved to the rooftop of the University Center where guests gathered to hear from a series of featured speakers including Xavier University President, Reynold Verret, Ph.D. and U.S. Congressman and Xavier alum, Rep. Troy Carter. Many of the speakers extolled Xavier’s role in higher education for students who have a desire to create a more just and humane society as the school’s mission calls for all who enter its programs to do.
“As we reflect on the century of achievements, let us set forth our sights on the next 100 years. Xavier’s story is one of innovation and perseverance. It’s a story of resilience in the face of adversity and hope for a brighter future,” said Reynold Verret, Ph.D., Xavier University of Louisiana President. “Together we have an opportunity to build upon the remarkable foundation, ensuring that Xavier continues to be a beacon of opportunity and excellence for all who come through these incredible doors.”
“This milestone marks 100 years of transformative impact rooted in the vision of St. Katharine Drexel and Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament,” said U.S. Rep. Troy Carter. “The determination to create a space for academic and spiritual growth for African Americans in underserved communities has blossomed into a legacy of greatness. I stand here as a proud, proud graduate of Xavier University.”
The day’s celebrations wrapped up with the Xavier family gathering on the University Center grounds for an afternoon of New Orleans-style camaraderie, complete with king cake and a brass band. Today’s centennial launch is just the beginning of what will be an unforgettable year for Xavier University of Louisiana.
