Women’s transitional house set to open April 28 in Gary

Emma’s Transition House for Single Women

On Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. the public is cordially invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony for Emma’s Transition House for Single Women at 616 Maryland Street in Gary. The City of Refuge Christian Church, along with its Pastor, Michael A. Pirtle will host the event.

For over eleven years the City of Refuge Christian Church has been community driven working with community partners of Northwest Indiana toward a common goal to end homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction and poverty. In addition to community service they work very close with Lake County Community Corrections (L.C.C.C.) to assist work release residents obtain employment, counseling, housing and spiritual guidance so they can become the best person they can be upon leaving L.C.C.C.

Guests attending the event will see the work that has been completed, as well as have the opportunity to contribute.

The women deserve a second chance. Emma’s House will have space for twelve women to stay up to 24 months to get the help they need. Women will have a safe bed to sleep in and a community of support during their stay. Emma’s House has already established significant partners, including Lake County Community Corrections, NWI Urban League, SIBIS Counseling, Awakening Counseling Center, Goodwill Industries, and Work ONE. The shelter will rely heavily on donations from the church and general public. State Representative Linda Lawson (D) and Kellie Britt, Executive Director of Lake County Community Corrections are working tirelessly with City of Refuge to complete this project.

Mayor Karen Freeman Wilson and her staff have also been supporters of the project.

Donations for Emma’s Transition House for Single Women can be made at www.corccnwi.org.
