Hundreds of family members, friends and loved ones filled the Gary Southshore RailCats Stadium to witness more than 200 West Side Leadership Class of 2022 students graduate on Sunday, June 5.
The 54th commencement included remarks by principal Brandi Harrod; Mayor Jerome Prince; Dr. Paige McNulty, GCSC Manager; Jaylen Washington, salutatorian; and Samuel Coleman, valedictorian.
The keynote speaker, Artis Twyman, West Side alumni and Vice-President of Communications of the LA Rams, delivered more than his personal testimony. At the conclusion of his presentation, Twyman awarded a $1,000 scholarship to graduating senior, Brianna Walker, who was identified as an exemplary student who volunteers her time to help the elderly and young children.
Twyman’s motivational speech also included a call to action to remember to give back to community. “You have to think back to where it all started,” said Twyman. “Your greatness is not what you have, it’s what you can give.”
Brianna Walker will be attending Ivy Tech in the fall majoring in nursing.
“I want to help Brianna start to chase her greatness,” added Twyman.
The Gary Community School Corporation is offering two summer sessions to high school students began June 6, 2022. All grades, K-12, are eligible for full-day summer enrichment free of charge.
