Washington equipped to serve in the State Senate

On Thursday, January 21, 2016, Calumet Township Board President Darren Washington announced his candidacy to become the Democratic Nominee for Indiana State Senate in District 3.

“I will support a legislative agenda that will equally promote economic growth in Hobart, Lake Station, Gary, Merrillville, Crown Point, and New Chicago. We must support legislation that will strengthen public safety, and equality in education. We must also preserve and create new employment opportunities by supporting our Unions through continuous construction projects and supporting existing small businesses with revenue generation possibilities.”

Washington earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois and a Master’s Degree in Public Affairs from Indiana University Northwest. He is currently a Family Case Manager with the Indiana Department of Child services where he is actively engaged in securing the safety, stability and permanency of Hoosier youth and families. Washington acquired significant teaching experience as an Adjunct Professor at Ivy Tech State College where he has taught courses on “American Government and Politics.”

“If we want effective legislation that will improve the quality of life for Northwest Indiana residents, we need legislators working for (us) the people, not just corporate interests while in Indianapolis.”

Washington gained valuable experience in corporate America working in Real Estate Investment for Simon Property Group and telecom- munications for AT&T Corporation. Washington is the former President and member of the Gary School Board of Trustees, Gary Redevelopment Commission, and Gary Employee Relations Commission. He served as a member of the Gary Precinct Organization for 10 years, and as captain of the 2nd District Precinct Organization.

He gained criminal justice experience while working under Gary City Court Judge Deidre Monroe to create a Gary Truancy Court for children not attending school.
