Walk For Sexual Assault Awareness hopes to end month on a high note

Fair Haven will host its annual Fun Run and Walk in the Park on April 28 at Wicker Memorial Park in Highland, Ind. The run begins with a 10:15 a.m., shotgun start.

The three-mile walk, now in its 15th year, hopes to bring awareness to victims of sexual assault. All citizens and businesses from Northwest Indiana are invited to attend.

Kelly Vates, co-founder and executive director at Fair Haven, started the event in 2003 with the ultimate goal of eradicating sexual assault in Lake County.

“The walk has grown bigger and bigger each year,” said Vates, “This means that women’s voices are getting stronger.”

The Fun Run and Walk in the Park is a chance for citizens of Lake County to promote a caring, safe and nurturing community with a zero tolerance for violence.

With April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the walk will act as Fair Haven’s sendoff to the month that shares their message.

“We want everyone to come together for an empowering experience where women are free to share their stories with one another,” said Vates.

Donations of any size are encouraged at the Fun Run and Walk in the Park with all proceeds going towards services that Fair Haven provides to victims of sexual assault.
