Victoria Mahoney becomes first ever Black female director for Star Wars franchise

Filmmaker Victoria Mahoney has made history in a galaxy far, far away.

Mahoney was chosen to serve as the second unit director for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX film, according to E News.  She will reportedly oversee the supplementary footage for the project, which includes establishing shots, filming stunts, inserts, and cutaways.

Mahoney previous works include directing episodes for television shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Queen Sugar, and American Crime. Her latest gig with Star Wars marks the first time in the franchise’s history that a Black woman has held a directorial position.
