U-High Maroons girl’s tennis team wins 2019 IHSA Class 1A State Championship

For the first time in school history, the U-High Maroons girl’s tennis team of the University of Chicago Laboratory school won the 2019 IHSA Class 1A State Championship at Buffalo Grove High School becoming the first girls team ever to accomplish the feat.

The Lady Maroons earned their title with a total of 33 points. All players contributed, showing strong depth and talent throughout the team.

The team’s number one singles player, sophomore Emma Baker, scored 12 points and finished second. Number two singles player Krithi Sarav scored 6 points.

The number one doubles team of senior Izzie Kellermeier and sophomore Emilee Pak scored 12 points and finished second. And the senior led doubles team of Ananya Asthana/Macy Beal scored 3 points.

With the victory, the Maroons have now won seven IHSA State Championships over the past 110 years—five in Boys Track and Field 1909, 1910, 1911,1914, 1919, one in Boys Tennis in 2018 and Boys Soccer in 2019.

Over the past 40 years, the Lady Maroons have earned five state trophies (top three or four in State). Girls track and field 1979 (3rd), 1980 (2nd), 1981 (3rd), and soccer 2018 (4th).

The group accomplished this feat in late October.
