Donald Trump is now the “presumptive nominee” for the Republican Party’s candidate for president of the United States. He will most likely face Hillary Clinton in November if Senator Bernie Sanders doesn’t pull a surprise upset. Based on his apparently unpresidential demeanor, there are many in the Republican camp who are cringing at the prospect of a Trump candidacy. Actually, they have only themselves to blame. After eight years of bashing President Barack Obama they have managed to flush all of the crazies, racists and morons out of the woodwork. That may be a little harsh to say, but the machinations exhibited during what came from what has come to be known as “the party of no” because of its continual blockage of everything Obama, has fostered a negative taste in the mouth of America. It’s now alright to say ridiculous things and to be fashionably politically incorrect.
Some of the things that “The Donald” has said are incredibly ridiculous, and it is frightening to think that someone of such low character, inexperience, and just plain ignorance is just a heartbeat away from the presidency of the United States. Once upon a time people wrote him off as a joke, but the joke is now on them since we’ve come to realize that there are many more like him in America. If the number of his supporters is larger than was imagined, he might actually ascend to the presidency of the United States with the capability of pushing the doomsday nuclear button. Trump’s supporters are definitely not the sharpest knives in the drawer. They tend to be prone to violence, many are avowed racists, many don’t believe that global warming is happening, and they want to “Make America great again,” which is probably code-speak for saying “Make America white again.” The fact that such a character has come so far is quite appalling, but even more appalling is the fact that so many Americans are in sync with him.
Let’s look at some of the more infamous statements attributed to Trump, and in light of the fact that he has accused Hillary Clinton of “playing the woman card,” we can call the following statements Trump cards that he is playing to divide America. As stated in an online article by Team Marie Claire entitled “29 of the most outrageous Donald Trump quotes,” Trump has allegedly made the following statements: “Arianna Huffington is unattractive, both inside and out. I fully understand why her former husband left her (sic) for a man he made a good decision.” “You know, it really doesn’t matter what [the media] write as long as you’ve got a young, and beautiful, piece of a$$.” “I will build a great wall and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.” “If I were running The View, I’d fire Rosie O’Donnell. I mean, I’d look at her right in that fat, ugly face of hers, I’d say Rosie, you’re fired.” “I’ve said if Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her.” “My fingers are long and beautiful, as, it has been well documented, are various other parts of my body.” Another article attributed to Abagond quotes Trump as saying “laziness is a trait in Blacks.”
It is also well known that Trump wants to ban all Muslims from the United States, and he took out a full page ad in the New York Daily News calling for the death penalty for the Central Park 5, five teenage boys, all Black or Hispanic, who had been wrongly accused of beating and raping a jogger. This mean-spirited ad was dripping with the venom of race hatred. Do we want someone like this to be president? Emphatically No!
When considering the foregoing, it is beyond belief that someone like Donald Trump can capture the minds and hearts of so many Americans. This speaks volumes for the underbelly of America that would have remained hidden if not for Trump. Perhaps this is the greatest benefit of his candidacy, at least for Blacks. Conscious Black people already know what lies in store if he wins, but for the other Blacks who are inexplicably supporting Trump we must say, “Caveat Emptor,” let the buyer beware! A luta continua.
