South Chicago taxpayers urged to appeal assessments

Cook County Board of Review Commissioner George Cardenas Encourages South Chicago Township Taxpayers to Appeal Their Property Value Assessments Before the February 4th Deadline

Residential homeowners, who received roughly $3.3m in total property value reductions for tax year 2023, have until February 4th to appeal and potentially lower their future property tax bills

Homeowners in South Chicago Township have until February 4th to appeal their property’s assessed value to the Cook County Board of Review. Appealing with the Board of Review is a free service and can potentially lower your future property tax bills. For Tax Year 2023, approximately 62% of homeowners who filed directly to the Board of Review received a reduced property value.

“With single-family homes’ median estimated market values increasing in the 2024 reassessment compared to the 2021 median, my office is here to support taxpayers who are struggling with the accompanying property tax bills,” said Cook County Board of Review Commissioner George Cardenas. “We are here to help if you have questions about the appeal process, your exemptions, or the Cook County property tax system more broadly.”

“When I am talking with people in my district about the biggest issues impacting them, our conversation often goes back to their high property taxes, and how they fear being priced out of the community,” said State Senator Javier Lorena Cervantes (D-Chicago). “I am glad to work with the Cook County Commissioner’s office to help my constituents learn more about how to appeal their property assessment, which can offer them some financial relief.”

Taxpayers can visit cookcountyboardofreview.com or call the Cook County Board of Review at (312) 603-5542 to appeal before the February 4th deadline, learn more about the appeal process, and have questions addressed by Cook County Board of Review staff.
