Sorority to honor three at awards luncheon

The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., Beta Mu Chapter will host its 34th annual Teach-A-Rama Celebration on Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the Avalon Manor, 3550 E. Highway 30, Merrillville.

The event will include a Marketplace/Health Fair at 10:30 a.m. followed by an awards luncheon at 11:45 a.m. Tickets are $25.

Guest speakers for the occasion will be Nakia M. Douglas, Deputy Superintendent of the Gary Community School Corporation and Dr. Peter Morikis, Emergency Manager of the GCSC.

During the awards ceremony, three outstanding citizens will be honored. The distinguished Educator Award will be presented to Dwight Pointer, an educator of more than 20 years in the GCSC and current Dean of Students at McCullough Elementary school.

Vernon A. Williams, an accomplished journalist and media specialist, will be the recipient of the 2019 Community Citation Award.

The sorority will present its first Omnibus Award to Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson in recognition of her personal affiliation and benefit to Beta Mu Chapter, and for the outstanding service she has given to the people of Gary.

Entertainment will be provided by the Xinos and Kudos, two youth guidance groups sponsored by the National sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc.
