Services for Commissioner Robert Steele Saturday

Services for Cook County Commissioner Robert Steele will be held this weekend on Chicago’s West Side. Steele died Monday, June 19 while recovering from pneumonia. He was 55.

A visitation will be held at the Lawndale Community Church, 3827 W. Ogden Ave, from 5 p.m. to 8.p.m. on Friday, June 30. On Saturday, July 1, a wake will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. at the Freedom Baptist Church, 4541 Harrison Street, Hillside, IL. The funeral will be at the same location at 11:30, immediately following the wake.

Steele served as President Pro Tempore for the Cook County Board and was Commissioner of the county’s 2nd District.

He also held positions as President of the Forest Preserve District Board; Chairman of the Environmental Control Committee and the Contract Compliance Committee; and was vice chairman of the Health and Hospitals Committee.

In addition, Steele devoted his time to several local and national boards. He was a member of the Mt. Sinai Hospital board of directors, the Gift of Hope board of directors and was president of the board of trustees of Frazier Preparatory Academy.

Nationally, Steele worked as a member of the board of the National Association of Counties Officials (NACO) and was a member of the board of the National Association of Black County Officials (NABCO). He was president of NABCO from 2008-2010.
