Senior’s Day Celebration in Englewood-May 20

Today, 60 is the new 40 as Americans are living longer and with a higher quality of life.  During May, Older Americans Month, all across our country organizations, government, businesses, churches and community groups will be highlighting the many contributions of seniors and celebrating their vibrant lifestyles. Seniors have a strong voice in their communities. Aside from living longer, they are starting new careers, taking charge, striving for independence, speaking up for themselves and focusing on wellness.

The Englewood Exclusively Us Senior’s Day Celebration will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and will recognize seniors and their families in the Englewood Community.  The celebration will include a health fair, free merchandise, games, prizes, health screenings, complimentary meals, free transportation to/from senior buildings; and information about health, fitness, nutrition and local entertainment.  Performers include the: Ada Niles Senior Line Dancers, Chicago Dancing Divas and Dudes, Chi-Town Hoofers, gospel group Men of Destiny and DJ Batey.  The event boundaries are: 63rd street from Union to Halsted (east).  Halsted Street will be open to N/S traffic.  Then reopen 63rd Street from Halsted to Sangamon (west).

“We are excited to be able to have our first Englewood Exclusively Us Senior’s Day Celebration,” said Debra Thompson, Chairperson (Exclusively Us Senior’s Day Celebration).  “This event will be an opportunity to engage seniors, recognize their value and acknowledge the many contributions they have made to the community and, in many instances, the country.”

The health fair is just one of several activities planned this year for Englewood—a neighborhood that is experiencing a resurgence in economic growth with the opening of Englewood Square in 2016.

Ms.Thompson added, “We are thankful to the many sponsors for supporting our Senior’s Day Celebration, which we hope will become an annual event.”  A backdrop to the health fair, Englewood Square has large retailers, including a Whole Foods grocer, Oak Street Health facility, Chipotle, and Starbucks.  Major sponsors of the Exclusively Us Senior’s Day Celebration are Oak Street Health, the Signature Sponsor; and DL3 Realty, LP, a Presenting Sponsor.  Other sponsors are: Chicago Department of Family & Support Services, Calahan Funeral Home, MA3 Healthcare Solutions, My ReBuilt Life, Catholic Charities, Peoples Gas, Salvation Army, Wellness Healthcare and Whole Foods.

Expected to reach 1,500 people, trolley cars will transport seniors from the 20 plus senior facilities within the area and from the Englewood Senior Satellite Center.  Once on site at the health fair, they will receive a meal, recyclable bag for health resources, information plus free products and samples.  Attendees will be able to play a variety of games, win great prizes and catch up with friends and family.

Hope to see you!!!!!
