Rev. Dr. L Bernard Jakes to lead diverse group of churches at Lightfoot’s inauguration

The program is set for Mayor-Elect’s Lori Lightfoot’s inauguration.

Rev. Dr. L. Bernard Jakes, senior pastor of West Point Missionary Baptist Church, will do the invocation at the ceremony at the Wintrust Arena in the South Loop, according to the program obtained by the Crusader Sunday morning during check-in for media credentials.

The inauguration begins at 10 am on Monday, May 20. WVON will broadcast the ceremony live from a suite overlooking the stage. The Crusader will also be there along with local and national media organizations.

The married couple of Alfreda Burke and Rodrick Dixon, who perform annually for the “Too Hot To Handle” during the Dr. Martin Luther King Holiday, will sing “Make Them Hear You” from the Broadway Musical “Ragtime.”

Miguel Cervantes of Chicago’s “Hamilton” will perform the national anthem along with the Chicago Sinfonetta.

Lightfoot is scheduled to be sworn in during the middle of the program by U.S. Judge Susan E. Cox of the Northern District of Illinois. The city’s 50 alderman, Treasurer-elect Melissa Conyears-Ervin and City Clerk Anna M. Valencia will be sworn in before Lightfoot. Valencia will take the oath given by Associate Judge Mary C. Marubio. Then, Valencia administer the oath to swear in the aldermen and Conyears-Ervin.

At 2 p.m. Lightfoot will host an open house for the public at City Hall.
