This event is part of the national Wear Orange campaign, which brings awareness to gun violence at the start of summer, when gun deaths increase, and calls for meaningful action to prevent further tragedies. Family and friends of Hadiya Pendleton started Wear Orange after she was fatally shot in a Chicago park in the Second District, just weeks before Rep. Kelly swore her first oath of office in 2013. Hadiya would be turning 28 this June 2, and Blair Holt, who was fatally shot in 2007, would be turning 35 this June 1.
