QCUL to host Annual Equality Gala “A Red Hot Affair” to raise funds in support of education, workforce and community development

 Lead prosecutor in Jason Van Dyke trial is one of this year’s honorees

The Quad County Urban League (QCUL) will host their 2018 Annual Equality Gala “A Red Hot Affair” on Saturday, October 27th at the Chicago Marriott Southwest Hotel. The black-tie fundraiser supports the organization’s core values of racial justice, civil rights, and economic empowerment. Honorees for this year’s Gala are Attorney Joe McMahon, lead prosecutor in the Jason Van Dyke trial and Margaret ‘Margi’ Schiemann, director of community affairs for Nicor Gas. Guy Albertson, president of UPS CACH, served as this year’s Gala Chair. Entertainment headliners are the eclectic and exciting Dirty Muggs of St. Louis.

This year’s honorees have demonstrated a commitment to economic empowerment and social justice that extends across all of Chicagoland. Schiemann by championing workforce development efforts in the rapidly expanding utilities industry, and McMahon by securing a guilty verdict in the trial of former Chicago Police Office Jason Van Dyke who was recently convicted of murdering 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.

“Both of this year’s recipients have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to equality and opportunity for all Americans,” said Theodia Gillespie, president and CEO of the QCUL. “We are pleased to recognize them at this year’s Annual Equity Gala that provides needed funds to strengthen the quad county communities through education, job creation and other needed resources.”

Funds raised at the 2018 Annual Equality Gala support the programs of the QCUL which encompass education, workforce development and building strong communities. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds will fund educational scholarships for youth.

Emcee for the event will be Devorah Crable. The Gala begins at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails and Dinner, and a silent auction.   The program begins at 7:30, followed by a live auction. Live auction items include vacation packages, with airfare, to Orlando, Napa Valley and Aruba. The evening’s auctioneer will be Tom Finch.
