President of Black United Fund of Illinois dies in car accident

Henry L. English, founder and president/CEO of the Black United Fund of Illinois (BUFI), died in a car accident Saturday. He was on his way to do campaign work for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

English was taken to Northwestern Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

As head of BUFI, Mr. English has fought numerous community battles and was key in saving and transforming the South Shore Country Club into the South Shore Cultural Center.

English was also instrumental in the reorganization of the South Shore High School into four small schools and was currently working on the development of the new South Shore International College Prep High School. His motto was “help people help themselves.”

Funeral arrangements are pending.
