Pre-registration underway for Back-to-School Jamboree 3-on-3 B-Ball Tournament

State Rep. Vernon G. Smith (D-Gary) said the Back-to-School Three-on-Three Basketball Tournament is now accepting pre-registration applications.

The tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. and finish by 4 p.m. during the Back-to-School Jamboree Saturday, Sept. 9 on the Indiana University Northwest (IU Northwest) Campus.

“The tournament always attracts the top talent in Northwest Indiana,” said Dr. Smith. “These are the stars of tomorrow, many of whom already play in area high schools and universities. These players elevate the sport of basketball into an art form. In fact, talent scouts are sometimes in the stands watching carefully and taking notes.

“Winning this prestigious tournament is an achievement recognized by players throughout the area,” added Dr. Smith. “I recommend that teams pre-register for the event in order to guarantee that they will have a slot in the tournament.”

Dr. Smith said he can be reached at 887-2046. One can also stop by the Beautiful Things store at 3570 Village Court in Gary to get an application.

The tournament features numerous divisions, based on gender and age. The $30 team pre-registration fee covers the cost of trophies and other prizes. Dr. Smith urged early registration, because on-site registration will be $45. Each three-on-three player will receive a free t-shirt and free lunch. Winning teams in each category will receive a trophy. The tournament will be held inside the IU Northwest Savannah Hall Gymnasium.

There will be other events for students of all ages.

For younger children, the Jamboree features face painting, finger painting and a drawing contest.

For the older ones, there will be a dance contest, a double-Dutch jump rope contest and a video game tournament. A DJ will provide music for dancing from noon-4 p.m. inside Savannah Hall Auditorium. For those who love movies, a film festival will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Area agencies will have exhibit booths and pass out information about what those organizations offer students. Booths are available for rental to groups that offer youth services or have products to sell. Dr. Smith may be contacted at 219-887-2046 for more information.

The Jamboree is sponsored by Dr. Smith; the African-American Achievers Youth Corps, Inc.; the I.U. Dons, Inc.; Indiana University Northwest; Haywood & Flemings Associates Insurance Agency; the Gary Crusader; the 411 News; Geminus Corporation; Fresh County Market; King Milan Barber Shop; Familia Dental; Centier Bank; MetroPCS; the Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males; and the Indiana Civil Rights Commission.
