Odessa Hurt, a revered matriarch, beloved mother, grandmother, and pillar of her community, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was 85 years old. A resident of Lynwood, Illinois, Odessa’s life was one of deep faith, unwavering love, and an enduring commitment to helping others.

Born on July 20, 1939, to George and Rosie Bell Trawick, Odessa was the eighth of ten children. Her roots were firmly planted in the values of family, faith, and service. Throughout her life, Odessa was known for her nurturing spirit, always offering wisdom, guidance, and unconditional support to those around her. For over 45 years, she had been an active and devoted member of the Christian Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, where she became a beacon of hope and inspiration for many.

“She was a woman of God, and her life was a testament to the power of love, kindness, and selflessness,” said Lynwood Mayor Jada D. Curry. “We were all deeply saddened by her passing. The Village of Lynwood extended its heartfelt condolences to Commissioner Bryan Hurt and the entire Hurt family.”

Mother Odessa, as she was affectionately known by many, had become a mentor to countless African American women and girls in her community. Her legacy of compassion, service, and dedication to the welfare of others lived on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In addition to her church contributions, Odessa had been a cornerstone of her family. She was a proud and loving mother to eight children: Barbara, Charles Hurt Jr. (Carol), Gloria Hurt, Norva Dixon (Phillip), Alana Schrock (David), Dr. Lisa Malone (Calvin), Pamela Baker (Bruce), and her beloved daughter, Deborah, who preceded her in death. Odessa was also preceded in death by her devoted husband, Charles.

Her loving legacy continues through her 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and her cherished great-great-grandson. Each of them carries forward the lessons and love she had so freely imparted throughout her life. Her son, Commissioner Bryan Hurt, who serves as the Assistant Pastor of the Lighthouse Church of All Nations, shared, “My grandmother instilled strong morals and ethics in our family. The values she demanded of me are reflected in my approach to ministry, my family, and my business endeavors.”

The community had recognized Mother Hurt not just for her family and church service, but also for the wider impact she made in public service. “It’s very rare that you come across such a pillar in the community,” said Illinois State Representative Thaddeus Jones. “She was well-deserving of the many accolades that poured in after her passing.”

As a woman of faith and a nurturing mentor, Odessa had been a guiding light for many, particularly women and children. Her dedication to fostering faith, hope, and love within the community ensured that her memory would live on for generations to come.

In a statement of gratitude, the family expressed their deep appreciation for the outpouring of prayers and support from the community during this difficult time. “Her wisdom, warmth, and unwavering faith will forever be remembered by her family, friends, and church community,” they said. “Her spirit will continue to inspire and uplift those who had the privilege of knowing her.”
