“Nehemiah Project” coming to House of Hope

By Chinta Strausberg

Addressing the lack of morals and character in society today, Spencer Leak, Sr., president, CEO A.R. Leak, is holding a gathering of community activists and religious leaders at 6 p.m., Thursday, May 23, at the House of Hope, 752 E. 114th St.

Just as Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, Leak’s goal is to implement the Nehemiah Project and rebuild the spiritual walls of Chicago to deal with the constant crime that so far has taken the lives of close to 200 people this year, with more than 700 shot and growing every day.

With the support of a number of churches, Leak is convening ministers and supporters to discuss the Nehemiah Project and how it can reduce crime and restore the integrity of not just the Black community but also the entire city of Chicago.

Leak has invited popular Gospel singers Fred Hammond and Kierra Sheard, Pastor Charles Jenkins, the award-winning Gospel youth group Joshua’s Troop, the Victory Travelers, Walt Whitman & Soul Children, the Thompson Community Choir, 300 Voice COGIC Mass Choir and the Salem Choir to the event. The keynote speaker will be Bishop Charles E. Blake, presiding Bishop, Church of God in Christ, Inc.

In inviting the faith community to this historic event, Leak said, “As it was 2500 years ago with Nehemiah, so it is with us today. The walls of the city of Chicago are broken down, and the people of Chicago are in great distress and reproach. The North gate and the South gate as well as the East gate and the West gate are burned with fire. The indispensable beams that have held this city up for so many years are broken and desperately in need of repair.”
