Meet T.J. Chester and Darrell Hervey, duo behind The New Black Entertainment
T.J. Chester and her husband Darrell Hervey are the duo behind The New Black Entertainment, a film and television production company based in Gary, Indiana. They’re set to begin filming their first movie “Running with Wolves” this month and a television series called “219” later this year.
Chester is a Gary native and graduate of Indiana University Northwest with a Bachelor’s degree from Full Sail University and a Master of Fine Arts degree. She released her three-part book series, “Running with Wolves,” in 2014, upon which the movie is based. T.J. wrote the film and will be both directing and producing the project. Darrell has a career in law enforcement and has utilized his knowledge of police practices to consult on film and TV projects, ensuring police procedures are accurately displayed on screen. He is also well versed in stage combat and weapons training.
“Running with Wolves” is an urban crime/drama feature film about a promiscuous young woman named Rae, who, after being evicted from her home, joins a gang that commits a string of robberies. When Rae changes her mind about her involvement with the gang, fear of the other members retaliating keep her at their side. It is a modern-take on the 1996 film “Set it Off,” and Grover McCants, Bill K. Kenney and Maubra Foster are set to appear in the film. Also, there are some characters left to cast. Interested actors in the Chicago or Gary area should apply through the casting call website Backstage or by emailing their head shots, resumes, and reels (if applicable) to [email protected].
In a world of advanced technology, almost anyone can make a film. The challenge is making a good one and then actually completing it. That is exactly what Chester is in the process of doing. “I’ve been focused for the past three years on seeing this through to completion, and I can finally see the light!” Those who have read her books are excited to see how they translate to the screen. This is an urban drama of a different light, with many layers to each character. “219” is The New Black Entertainment’s other project, a television series about a Gary, Indiana homicide detective who is on a quest to unravel the truth and seek revenge after her entire family were found murdered.
Chester’s production of “Running with Wolves” will wrap by April 2019. Her plan is to have red carpet premieres in both Atlanta and Gary this September. She is asking for support on the following social media sites:
