Melvin Carter will become the next mayor of St. Paul, according to unofficial voting results.

Carter won with 50.89 percent of votes in the first round of counting, securing the spot to become the city’s next leader.

During a celebration with his campaign Tuesday night, Carter thanked all 600 of his volunteers and the 2,000 people who contributed to the campaign. He also said, most of all, he wanted to thank the voters.

“I really appreciate the support that we have from St. Paul voters all over this city and to know that they spoke loudly and clearly in the way that they did, it’s incredibly humbling,” Carter said.
