Mayor Hatcher celebrates 84th birthday

Let the celebration begin is what family, friends and supporters did when they gathered at the home of Ronald Matlock, to celebrate two birthdays. The birthdate celebrants were former Mayor Richard Hatcher, who turned 84, and Real Estate Broker Angela Theus. They both celebrated their birthdays on July 10. Matlock has known Hatcher for over 4 decades.

Fortunate for everyone the weather was agreeable and provided a beautiful backdrop for the outdoor event. Friends and supporters at the gathering provided the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company and excellent food provided by the host. Several of the guests shared their fondest memories of working with Hatcher on various projects during his time in office.

In four months, on Nov. 4, a grand celebration will take place to mark the 50th anniversary of Richard Hatcher’s election as one of the first Black mayors of a major city in the U.S. Hatcher was 34 years old at the time of his election and served for 20 years. The anniversary celebration is expected to include civil rights luminaries and current political leaders. Proceeds from the gala will go to the establishment of a National Civil Rights Hall of Fame.
