Mayor Emanuel announces City Colleges partnering with UPS to hire thousands for holiday season

Mayor Rahm Emanuel today announced UPS is looking to fill more than 3,800 part-time and seasonal jobs in the Chicago area to prepare for the upcoming holiday season. To help fill the positions, the company is partnering with the City Colleges of Chicago to host three hiring fairs on the south and west sides.

“Chicago’s workforce is the perfect match for a company that specializes in transportation and logistics,” Mayor Emanuel said. “These job fairs will connect qualified candidates from neighborhoods across Chicago with these jobs that can help prepare for a career in a flagship Chicago industry.”

UPS is planning to hire more than 3,200 part-time and seasonal positions at locations in Chicago, Palatine, Northbrook, Franklin Park, Bedford Park and Addison. The company is hiring an additional 600 permanent positions at the company’s regional facility in Hodgkins. Public transportation is available from the south side directly to the Hodgkins facility, and UPS will shuttle employees to the northern suburb locations from its facility at 1400 S. Jefferson Street.

The openings are for a combination of positions, including delivery drivers as well as entry-level package handlers and driver helpers. Many seasonal employees will have the opportunity for advancements into permanent positions following the holiday season.

Hiring fairs will be hosted at the following City Colleges of Chicago:
· Olive-Harvey College, 10001 S. Woodlawn Ave., Chicago: Friday, November 18, 2016, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
· Malcolm X College, 1900 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago: Monday, November 21, 2016, 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm
· Richard J. Daley College, 7500 S. Pulaski Rd., Chicago: Tuesday, November 22, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

“City Colleges of Chicago is dedicated to providing our students with educational and economic opportunities,” said City Colleges Chancellor Cheryl Hyman. “Our work with UPS and other College to Careers industry partners means that for students, skills gained in the classroom can successfully translate into high-demand positions in the workforce.”

Pre-registration for the hiring fairs is not necessary. Candidates are required to bring two forms of identification. The most common forms are a driver’s license or state ID and a birth certificate or social security card. Forms of ID must be originals (no copies) and cannot be expired. Passports will also be accepted, and free parking is available at all locations. The Chicago Cook Workforce Partnership will also be on site to offer additional employment services to residents.

Chicago’s transportation, distribution and logistics industry accounts for $22 billion in Gross Regional Product and 200,000 jobs. The industry is estimated to add 110,000 jobs over the next decade. Estimates suggest that between a quarter and a third of all freight tonnage in the U.S. originates, terminates or passes through the region. Chicago is the only city in the nation where six of the major North American railroads intersect.

To prepare students for in-demand careers in ground, air, and rail transport, multi-modal distribution and logistics, City Colleges has made Olive-Harvey Colleges its Center of Excellence in Transportation, Distribution and Logistics (TDL) education, and has announced construction of a TDL Center at Olive-Harvey College. The 103,000-square-foot facility has been designed with input from City Colleges’ College to Careers faculty and industry partners.

Through College to Careers, launched by Mayor Emanuel and Chancellor Hyman in 2011, City Colleges faculty and staff partner with industry leaders to design curriculum and facilities and offer internships and job opportunities to ensure Chicagoans are ready to hit the ground running in fast-growing fields.
