Lonnie Bunch, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, will deliver June 21 Northwestern commencement address

Author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie among those receiving honorary degrees

Lonnie G. Bunch III, the new secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, will receive an honorary degree and deliver the address for Northwestern University’s 161st commencement ceremony. The event will be held at 9:30 a.m., Friday, June 21 at the University’s Ryan Field, 1501 Central St., Evanston.

As the 14th secretary of the Smithsonian, Bunch oversees 19 museums, 21 libraries, the National Zoo and numerous research centers, education units and centers. Previously Bunch was director of the Smithsonian’s widely acclaimed National Museum of African American History and Culture and president of the Chicago Historical Society.

In addition to Bunch, five other distinguished leaders in the arts, sciences, business and philanthropy will be awarded honorary degrees from Northwestern: novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, computer scientist Alan Kay, business leader Bernard Osher, health advocate Shirley Welsh Ryan and global entrepreneur Andrew Youn.
