Crusader Staff Report

Blacks films and actors dominated the Oscar nominations Tuesday in a historic announcement where “Black Panther” was nominated for seven Oscar awards, including Best Picture. It was the first time ever that a superhero movie was nominated in the top category in Hollywood’s most celebrated awards ceremony. Two other Black films that were nominated for Best Picture, “BlackkKlansman” and “Green Book” each received five Oscar  nominations.

In addition to Best Picture, “Black Panther” was nominated for Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, Original Song, Production Design, Sound Editing and Sound Mixing.

“BlackkKlansman” received Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Directing, Film Editing, Original Score and Adapted Screenplay. “Green Book” received nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Film Editing and Original Screenplay.

Another Black film, “If Beale Street Could Talk,” earned three nominations for Best Supporting Actress, Original Score and Adapted Screenplay.

After winning the Golden Globe Award for their roles, actress Regina King and Mahershala Ali have both received nominations after winning the Golden Globes Award this month. Riding a wave of momentum, both are expected to win an Oscar during the February 28 ceremony.

Lee was nominated for Best Director for “BlackkKlansman,” a movie based on a true story of a Black Colorado police officer who goes undercover to infiltrate a KKK chapter. It was  Lee’s first Oscar nomination since 1998. In 1990, Lee was nominated for directing “Do the Right Thing.” In 1998, he was nominated for “4 Little Girls,” a 1998 documentary about the 1963 bombing of a Black church in Birmingham, Alabama.
