Let’s Celebrate the Unsung Heroes: Family Caregivers

Can you believe that it’s November already? The end of the year is upon us, and it’s the perfect time to celebrate individuals who rarely get the credit they deserve — family caregivers! They are everywhere, whether in a professional setting or simply at Grandma’s house! Caregivers are those who look after our loved ones, and November is the month we salute these unsung heroes.

Someone reading this article probably remembers the time when mom or dad got a little older and was no longer able to live alone or simply needed some assistance. For those of us who have families and careers, an additional responsibility of caring for an ailing loved one may not be feasible. That’s where these modern day superheroes step in!

My article has several purposes. First, I will share ways that caregivers positively impact our lives. Then let’s discuss the challenges faced as they strive to provide compassionate and consistent care to our families. Lastly, I will highlight innovative yet simple ways to recognize the caregivers we love and adore throughout November! After all, they need to know just how much they are appreciated.

The Impact

When truly devoted caregivers are in your life, the quality of your life is immediately enhanced. They provide a sense of relief and comfort knowing that someone is going to provide care for your loved one like you would.

The Challenges

Check out these statistics:

-The average family caregiver is a working mother of school-aged children.

-Up to 70 percent of the time, the family caregiver manages the medications.

-Six out of 10 family caregivers work full or part-time in addition to juggling their caregiving responsibilities at home.

The above stats only begin to describe the scenarios of caregivers. Most are performing their duties out of love, so they will rarely express dismay about work conditions or daily stresses.

Let’s Celebrate

So, after getting a glimpse of a caregiver’s life, you understand why we must use all of November to raise awareness and give accolades to those who are critical components in our lives.

During November, consider providing a respite for someone you know who provides care for a loved one. Offer to spend time with them or to learn to help out. Ask what you can do to make a difference.

Post some words of thanks to your family caregiver on social media. Let everyone know how much her or she is appreciated. Kindness goes a long way.

Most important, periodically thank your caregiver with words and gestures that remind them of their value.

In summary, there are countless individuals who would readily admit that they don’t know how they would function without a family caregiver. So let’s pause, place them in the spotlight and acknowledge the hard work they put in day in and day out.
