Legendary basketball player Fred Marberry dies

Fred Marberry passed on March 21, 2019 in Robbins, IL, at the home he shared with his wife, Geta Aikens Marberry.

Marberry was an inspiration and role model for his 10 children, and for many of his friends and relatives.

He graduated from Peoria Manual High School and Illinois (Normal) State University. He was a legendary basketball player at both and was voted into the Illinois Coaches’ Hall of Fame.

He was the all-time leading scorer at Illinois State, until his scoring records were broken by Doug Collins, who was later the Coach for the Chicago Bulls.

After college, Marberry played for the Harlem Globetrotters, entertaining thousands across the country.

A versatile and personable man, Marberry was a teacher and golf coach at West Side High School in Gary, IN and an Info News columnist.

He was known as a master host and mixologist at Dobbie’s Bar, Byrd’s Pub and the Zodiac in Gary; and the Dating Game, the Fantasy, Legends, the Celebrity, Player’s Choice and Sweet Georgia Brown’s, in Chicago and County Club Hills.

Mr. Marberry’s life will be celebrated during his wake at A.R. Leak Funeral Home at 18400 South Pulaski (Crawford) Road, Country Club Hills, IL, scheduled on Friday March 29, 2019 from 6-9 p.m.

His wake and funeral will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2019. Wake, 10-11 a.m.; funeral 11:00-12:00 p.m. at New Faith Baptist Church, 25 Central Avenue, Matteson, IL.
